You will find many laboratories, which advertise, “Testing is performed by an AABB Accredited Laboratory.” The fact is there are less than 50 laboratories in the world which are AABB Accredited Parentage Testing Facilities. You can view a list of labs that are accredited by clicking here.
You might ask how is it possible to advertise AABB Accreditation if they are not on that short list? The answer is, there are many paternity laboratories, which act as a middleman for an AABB Accredited Laboratory. Affiliated Genetics performs all testing at our 12,000-ft² laboratory in Salt Lake City, Utah. We do not send any samples out for processing. All testing has been performed under our strict testing procedures and guidelines for over eleven years.
AABB Accredited Parentage Testing Facilities must perform all sample collections and identity testing using stringent AABB guidelines, which non-accredited laboratories are not required to adhere to. Below is a partial list of mandatory practices all AABB Accredited Laboratories must perform:
- The laboratory director and lab personnel must meet stringent AABB experience and educational requirements in order to obtain and retain accreditation.
- AABB Accredited Laboratories must periodically perform external and internal reviews.
- All paternity cases, which result in an exclusion, are repeated.
- AABB Accredited Laboratories must submit to regular laboratory inspections and/or audits.
- All testing methods must be approved by the AABB, prior to use in the lab.
- Proficiency testing is completed four times each year.
- All key laboratory personnel must complete a minimum of 12 hours continuing education per year.
- All equipment must be calibrated regularly for accuracy.
